Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on 4 April 1972, located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. She was also raised by her grandmother. She grew up being an all-single child. Scott was a student at the Philadelphia High School for Girls After graduating, she was accepted into Temple University. While working two jobs as a teacher, she was studying secondary education. Her goal was to be an high school English teacher. However, her dream was put on hold when after 3 years of studying and working as an assistant to teachers she dropped out of college. After starting her career performing at live poetry performances, she eventually teamed up Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me, their joint song, was written by the duo. In a Roots performance, she declared her artist status. In the following years, she managed to get collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. During the Canada tour for the Broadway musical Rent She gained invaluable experiences performing. She was the first signed artist to label Hidden Beach Recordings label.
